ABOUT THE PROJECT

The NHS partnered with Excel Energy to transform the Royal Marsden Hospital’s energy infrastructure by installing a commercial solar PV installation, targeting to reduce energy consumption, support sustainability, and deliver long-term cost savings.

The project includes Stewart House (6.37 kWp), Chelsea Wing (53.69 kWp), Mulbury House (21.39 kWp), and Dove House (8.19 kWp). Each system is designed to increase energy generation and efficiency across the hospital’s facilities.

What Did We Do?

During this project, Excel Energy used a total of 197 DMEGC Solar 455W N-type Double Glass Bifacial modules, which were installed across the site, delivering a combined installed capacity of 89.64 kWp.

Each installed system features a pitched array SolarEdge optimised for the best available sun exposure, further enhancing energy yield.

To make sure that system performance is seamless, all PV installation arrays are equipped with SolarEdge inverters and S500 optimisers.

STEWART’S HOUSE

Uses a single SE5K 3-phase inverter paired with 14 S500 optimisers.

CHELSEA WING

The largest installation, incorporates two SE20K 3-phase inverters and 118 optimisers.

MULBURY HOUSE

Operates with a SE16K 3-phase inverter and 47 optimisers.

DOVE HOUSE

Utilises a SE6000H 1-phase inverter and 18 optimisers.

HOW DOES A COMMERCIAL SOLAR PV INSTALLATION IMPACT THE HEALTH CARE SECTOR?

With the SolarEdge monitoring platform, hospital facility managers can monitor system performance and energy production in real time. This provides clear, actionable insights that support effective ongoing energy management and help maximise the value of the commercial solar installation.

These installations are expected to generate a significant amount of clean electricity annually, offsetting a considerable volume of CO emissions. For example:

✅ Stewart House is expected to produce 4,820 kWh per year, saving 932.01 kg of CO₂e.

✅ Chelsea Wing is set to produce 49,550 kWh per year, cutting 9.58 tonnes of CO₂e.

✅ Mulbury House and Dove House will provide 18,761 kWh and 7,076 kWh per year, saving 3.63 and 1.37 tonnes of COe respectively.

ROYAL MARSDEN HOSPITAL SOLAR PV INSTALLATION COMPLEXITIES & SOLUTIONS

The Royal Marsden Hospital project presented a range of technical challenges that required a detailed and methodical approach from our team.

Access and scaffolding were particularly complex due to the presence of narrow and elevated walkways, high-rise structures, and limited space for equipment. To warrant safety, two dedicated staffs were assigned to monitor the road and guide people safely to the hospital, especially in these busy areas. Working within a live hospital environment, we accurately planned each phase to guarantee zero disruption to daily operations.

With restrictions on heavy lifting equipment, our team used manual handling techniques, required by the inability to operate machinery or install hoists on the narrowed site, and coordinated closely with site management to safely transport materials.

Additional complexities included the need to install extra slate roof tiles and deploy PV arrays across multiple roof sections, requiring careful logistical planning and specialist expertise. The installation also demanded precise integration with the hospital’s Building Management System, Firefighter Gateway, and lightning protection infrastructure, certifying full compliance with site protocols and maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability.

THE BENEFITS OF COMMERCIAL SOLAR PV INSTALLATIONS WITHIN THE HEALTH CARE SECTOR

This project sets Royal Marsden Hospital on a clear path to reducing both energy costs and carbon emissions over the long term. By moving to solar power, the hospital is taking practical steps to improve operational efficiency and demonstrate its commitment to sustainability.

Royal Marsden Hospital’s solar PV installation provides a strong example for other healthcare facilities looking to embrace renewable energy.

By choosing advanced solar technology, the hospital is helping to set a standard for sustainability across the NHS.
