89.25kwp Commercial Solar PV Installation For Beckenham Care Home, London
The Brief
Excel Energy was contacted by Beckenham Care Home as they were looking for more sustainable sources of energy. Energy bills can be one of the biggest expenses for care homes. And as prices were rising, this care home was looking for ways to protect itself from further price increases.
Beckenham Care Home offers residential, nursing and dementia care to the elderly in the area. Ensuring residents are comfortable is their number one priority while they provide bespoke care for each individual. Keeping the home at a comfortable temperature, well-lit, and operating any medical machinery, their energy bills can be high, so they were looking for renewable and sustainable ways to reduce them.
Our brief was to install a roof-mounted commercial Solar PV system. The mounting system was to use Schletter FixZ and Beams to mount the panels onto steel frames.

What Did We Do?
We provided a comprehensive service to Beckenham Care Home, first working with them to design a system to meet their energy needs and then sourcing and installing every part.
As with our projects, the process started with one of our members visiting the site to complete a survey. This helped our team better understand the care home’s services and the requirements its system would need to meet.
On the site visit, our specialist also assessed the roof for installation suitability and the premise to determine where storage batteries would be able to be placed. We also discussed timelines to incorporate them into our planning and designs.
We then completed our detailed designs, which included information about the mounting system, materials, manufacturers and placement of each aspect of the system.
At the core of our design process was Beckenham Care Home and their needs. We ensured their active involvement by keeping them updated with our progress, discussing the designs and changes as we went. This collaborative approach guaranteed that the system would meet their requirements.
With the designs and quote signed off and Excel Energy confirmed to take on the project, we sourced every aspect of the solar panel system and booked a date for the installation.
Our installation process was meticulously planned and executed. We efficiently fitted 238 375wp Longi solar modules, overcoming challenges such as drilling the steel frames to the nearest millimetre for the Schletter rail. The steel frames were fitted exactly where they needed to go without any mistakes, and the Schletter rail was installed without a problem, showcasing our precision and expertise.
Throughout the installation process, we strictly adhered to health and safety rules to ensure the safety of our staff and others working and living around the site. This commitment to safety was a top priority, demonstrating our care and responsibility.
Once the whole system had been fitted, our team executed system checks to test whether each part was functioning optimally. We were then able to complete a full handover, during which we educated those who would be monitoring the system. The handover included a run-through of the app they could use to monitor performance, signs of issues, and how the system works.
We finally arranged relevant regulation inspections and certifications so the client had proof our system met the required standards.
The Outcome
The client was very satisfied with our work and was confident that the implemented system would help them decrease their energy bills and work towards reducing their impact on the environment.
They were particularly impressed with our stringent attitude to health and safety as every member of staff on-site worked with each other and those at the care home to ensure everyone’s safety at all times.
The solar PV panel system generates an annual energy production of 41.40 MWh, meeting the care home’s energy needs sufficiently.
This translates into 7.21T of CO2 emissions saved a year and 389 trees planted annually.
