Planning for commercial solar energy integration

Commercial building solar panels implemented at the design stage reduces installation cost and complications by ensuring that the building’s infrastructure, such as electrical wiring, is prepared for solar technology. This proactive approach supports energy efficiency standards and helps align with future sustainability goals, making the building more attractive to eco-conscious buyers or tenants. In the long run, commercial solar energy integration adds value to new buildings and enhances their environmental impact. Incorporating commercial solar power early in the design phase ensures maximum energy generation.

Why Choose solar panels for commercial buildings

Choosing solar panels for commercial buildings is a smart investment that offers commercial property developers future-proofing infrastructure and long-term financial and environmental benefits.

With the growing emphasis on renewable energy and government incentives available, integrating solar power into commercial properties not only improves energy efficiency but also future-proofs buildings for evolving sustainability regulations.

Long-Term Savings

Solar panels for commercial buildings offer substantial energy savings over their 25-30 year lifespan. By generating clean energy on-site, owners reduce reliance on the grid and avoid fluctuating electricity costs. Over time, these savings can exceed initial installation costs, making solar a smart financial investment.

Meeting Energy Efficiency Goals

As stricter energy efficiency standards emerge, integrating commercial solar helps buildings meet regulations, reduce energy consumption, and lower carbon emissions. Solar power ensures compliance with green certifications and future mandates, making properties more attractive to eco-conscious investors and enhancing their value.

Access to Incentives and Rebates

Many regions offer financial incentives like tax credits, grants, and rebates to reduce the upfront costs of solar installations. These incentives help commercial developers make solar energy more affordable and attractive for new builds.

In general terms, solar panel systems are part of the permitted development, and no planning is needed.

Planning is only required if the building is listed or located in a National Park. In the case of AONBs (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), the planning laws regarding solar PV have relaxed considerably in recent years. It is best advised to always check with the relevant local authority. For larger or ground-mounted systems, planning permissions may need to be obtained. The application process could take up to 56 days to be approved. Our in-house team will take care of planning applications on your behalf.

Yes, a District Network Operators (DNO) will be required. Our team of designers will take care of this for you once a letter of authority has been signed.

It is not possible to give an estimate of what your system will generate without visiting your property, as there are five main factors that will affect how much energy your system will generate:

  • Total size of the PV array (number of panels)
  • Any shading
  • Latitude of the location
  • Direction the panels face
  • Angle the panels are mounted

However, to provide some estimates here, a 50kwpeak unshaded and standard string Inverter set-up would generate an estimated 51MWH annually.

We anticipate that a typical system will take approximately 3 to 7 years to recoup its initial investment and achieve an annual return on investment (ROI) of over 20% under current market conditions. After the system has covered the upfront costs, it is expected to generate a reliable income stream through energy savings and the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) by selling excess energy back to the grid. dion Content

You may need to replace the inverter after about 10 years, as it converts direct current (DC) from the solar panels into alternating current (AC). However, with advances in modern technology, many manufacturers are now offering warranties on inverters that last between 10 and 20 years. The solar panels themselves are expected to produce at least 85% of their original power after 25 years of use, with a lifespan that typically exceeds 30 years.

As for batteries, many manufacturers provide warranties of around 10 years or 8,000 cycles (charging and discharging), whichever comes first. These warranties often account for some level of degradation, typically around 15%.

Solar PV systems are generally very low maintenance as they have no moving parts.

It is recommended that you service your PV system regularly to maintain it at peak efficiency. Typically, the system should have a health check at least every couple of years.
